Stratford Upon Avon

stratford upon avonExplore Shakespeare’s birthplace as part of a walking tour of the town of Stratford upon Avon.

The house belonged to his father John, a glovemaker, who set up his workshop here prior to the birth of his eight children, including William the oldest boy. The house is full of Shakespearean artefacts including a copy of the First Folio. Usually in the garden of the birthplace there are a company of actors performing one of his plays live. On the walking tour you can see the school that The Bard almost certainly attended, as well as the house where his daughter Susanna lived with her husband Dr John Hall. Your Blue Badge guide will accompany you on your tour of Stratford from birthplace to the site of his burial at Holy Trinity Church in the town, to explain the life and times of England’s greatest ever writer. A short distance from Stratford town is the cottage where his wife Anne Hathaway grew up and where Shakespeare courted her. This is a fascinating visit to see the cottage of a relatively affluent family, as it would have appeared in the 16th century when Shakespeare would have known it.

Warwick Castle

Warwick Castle tours of englandA few miles away is the medieval town of Warwick with its imposing castle, a key stronghold during the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century.

The castle today is owned by Merlin Entertainments who have turned it into a themed visitor centre for all the family without destroying the flavour of its medieval heritage. Key features of the Castle are the Trebuchet, the largest of its kind in the world, which is fired twice daily; climbing the castle ramparts to enjoy spectacular views over the surrounding countryside; a visit to the impressive state rooms and medieval Great Hall; and Royal Party, an engaging visit to Warwick as it would have been at the end of the 19th century as a guest of the scandalous Countess of Warwick.
