Jane Austen

Jane Austen tours private tour guideThe year 2013 celebrated the bicentenary of the publication of Jane Austen’s most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice.

Her novels are among the most widely read in the English language and have been adapted for TV and film many times. These tours celebrate her life and work, both in London and her beloved Hampshire.

The final eight years of her life were spent in the rural tranquility of a Hampshire village of Chawton where she lived with her mother and sister Cassandra, in a settled home, provided by Jane’s brother, Edward. This was in complete contrast to the previous years spent in Bath and Southampton when Jane faced upheaval and uncertainty. At Chawton she wrote her six published novels, beginning with Sense and Sensibility in 1811. Her last two, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published posthumously.

The cottage at Chawton is now the Jane Austen Museum dedicated to her life and work where you will see her writing desk and other furniture from the period as well as some family heirlooms and editions of her novels. Set in its own lovely gardens the house remains much as Jane and her family would have known it. This is also an opportunity to explore the interiors and rural way of life in the early nineteenth century. A short drive away is the village of Steventon where Jane was born in a house occupied by her father. a rector at the local church where she was baptized. We will visit the church, which has been refurbished by a generous donation from the Jane Austen Society of North America.

We then visit Winchester to see the house where she died aged only 41, before visiting her tomb in the Cathedral, a popular shrine for all Jane Austen devotees.

Alternative tours can be arranged, such as a day in Bath that is focused on the life of Jane Austen, or a film locations tour that takes in the stately homes used in many of the sets.
