Visit medieval Oxford, home to one of the oldest universities in the world.
It is often described as the city of ‘Dreaming Spires’ because of its predominantly gothic architecture. Your Blue Badge guide will escort you on a walking tour of the town. We will see inside some of the college buildings such as Christchurch and New College. Many of these buildings are hundreds of years old and you will visit their dining halls, chapels and ‘quads’. Other highlights include the Divinity school, part of the world famous Bodleian Library and the Radcliffe Camera which part of its reading room complex. Other sites include the Sheldonian Theatre, used for the university’s graduation ceremonies. From here you can see the cityscape from its marvellous cupola.
Oxford has provided the setting for many films such as The Golden Compass, several of the Harry Potter films, and TV dramas including Inspector Morse. Your Blue Badge guide will be pleased to show you many of these locations plus other interesting sites in and around Oxford. This would include the pub where writers CS Lewis and JRR Tolkein used to meet others within a literary circle known as ‘The Inklings’.
From Oxford you will travel to the Cotswold town of Woodstock .
Here you will enjoy lunch prior to visiting Blenheim Palace, the ancestral home of the Dukes of Marlborough for over three hundred years. We will tour the formal and lavish state apartments and also see the room where Sir Winston Churchill was born, as part of a museum dedicated to the great man. Your visit will also include the formal Italian gardens as well as some of the 2000 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Other features in the grounds include a maze and a pleasure garden for the children which is reached by a miniature railway. On the way out from Blenheim we usually stop at the tiny village of Bladon, where Churchill and his family are buried in the local churchyard.
